“Families From Within”: What’s
to come
The concept of family has evolved considerably since this project
was begun in 1989. The once-universal nuclear family has given way
to single-parent families, same-sex couples with or without adopted
children, communities of mentally and physically challenged individuals,
older couples whose adult children return to the nest, and many
other forms.
Although some may decry the “loss” of the family unit,
we feel that this new diversity should be embraced and indeed celebrated.
It is not the nuclear family per se that is the basis of our society,
but the commitment that individuals make to each other to be caring,
supportive and loving on a daily basis.
Family is the first and closest experience of community, where
we develop the skills we need to interact with the wider world.
Most importantly, it is where we can be ourselves. Family is where
our joys and disappointments are woven together with those of our
kin to form a sheltering blanket of love.
There are other, darker sides to family as well. As much as the
family can be a loving place, so too can it be a place of hurt.
All of these experiences of family can be shared here.
So welcome, one and all. We would like to hear your stories of
